Veterans being used as test subjects

In Kansas City and San Antonio drug addicted veterans are being used as lab rates for cocaine studies. Researchers trying to develop a vaccine for Cocaine use are using tax payer dollars to do these dangerous studies on Veterans. Many of them are sucked in through lack of money and addiction... I find this really sad along with the fact that there are so many Veterans on the street, which the govt. could be better using the money to help.

Lions club burned down

The Lions Club tube rental facility across from Sewell Park burned down this Saturday. I went to the river with my boyfriend the other day and it looked almost completely destroyed. Police are supposedly investigating to see if it was Arson. Their supposed to have tube rental going again in some form in the next few months according to the news. I cant wait.. I prefer to rent tubes from them instead of the school, because the donate all money from rentals towards charity.

Mars Rover is Back!

The Spirit Rover which landed on Mars over 5 years ago is working again. After glitches recently that caused it to stop, one of the oldest rovers on mars is back in action. Though not as exciting as recent landings which are finding possible traces of life, the spirit rover is still an important tool in our exploration and understanding of Mars.

Pirates!

As fun as the recent movies made it look, real life piracy is no laughing matter. Over the last year there has been a surge in Somali pirates off the horn of Africa. The fact that Somalia is a lawless country plays a big part in this, and creates a breeding ground for corruption. Just in the last week, Somali pirates captured an American hostage and tried to negotiate a ransom. Luckily our Navy SEALS killed 3 of the pirates holding him and captured the 4th. Hopefully this will be less of an issue now that America is getting involved, though its harder than you would think to stop teenagers with assault weapons.

Obesity Worsening Global Warming

Lots of recent studies coming out are showing that growing obesity is putting more strain on our planet. An obese person puts about 1000 more tonnes of Co2 into the atmosphere in their lifetime. It uses more gas to move a heavier person, and obese people also eat more food which contributes to more greenhouse gases in food production. Obese people are also much more likely to drive than walk even over short distances.

Student Injustice at Texas State

For an academic institution you would expect the heads of Student Justice to be straight on their facts. Instead many of them would still rather believe in naive propaganda and completely disavow any truth that goes against this. Texas State has a policy to suspend and expel students with 2 Marijuana related charges, while others have stacked up 4+ DUIS among other things. If those running Student Justice could read they would realize that alcohol attributes to over 100000 deaths each year, while Marijuana ( The drug of choice for many refraining from drinking) can be attributed to 0. All of this leads to the question : Does student justice really have their heads that far up their asses or are they all just drunk?

OPEC wants to screw us over again (and again.. again)

The Organization of Oil Exporting Countries known as OPEC has decided that oil prices are still way to low. They have brushed off estimates by the Internation Energy Agency that current prices are still high considering the recession and have taken their own greedy stand. This group of American hating countries (most of them do..) has declared that anywhere below $70 a barrel is unacceptable. They are setting up for more production cuts to push prices closer to where they want them. Maybe one day they'll understand supply and demand...but who knows.

Don't Worry. Be Happy. Everything is Going to be Alright

The 7 Most important financial chiefs in the world, collectively called G7 ( Wannabe Super-Heros?) said after meeting Friday that they believe the recession should correct itself some time this year. They all agreed that banks still had a lot of work to undergo globally, but the worst is most likely over. This group of financial chiefs from such countries as The U.S., Britain, France, and Canada can hopefully see the ending of this recession better than they saw the beginning. None of them predicted this recession to turn out like it did and I'm not gonna trust them again until I'm sure they know what they're talking about...but don't take my word, I'm just a college student.

Swine Flu for Me and You

The Global Health Organization recently announced fears of a new epidemic sweeping across the globe. So far 68 people have died in Mexico, which has led Mexican President Felipe Calderon to declare a state of emergency allowing him to cancel all public events and order quarantines. 8 People have died so far in California an Texas and 1000 suspected cases have been found worldwide. This is much worse than it sounds as this strain of the flu has been found to spread impossibly fast, and leads quickly to pneumonia. The last global flu epidemic killed at least 1 million people. Maybe the time has to come to stay inside and watch more TV...

Scientist Find New Target in Their Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life

A group of European Scientist have just released findings on April 26th about a new almost Earth-like planet found outside of our solar system. The new planet is 20 lightyears away and is about 12000 miles across. Its the only other planet found so far to have a temperature range close to ours. Gliese 581c as it is called has an estimated temperature range between 32 – 102 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it the only planet discovered so far capable of containing liquid water. This will be a new staring point in our search for Alien life. The truth is out there..Hopefully we'll find it before it finds us.

UN Pushing for Prosecution of Bush Officials

Earlier this week President Obama released several C.I.A memos that detailed the types of torture allowed by the Bush Administration. While Obama has not mentioned what he plans to do, there is a new voice coming from the U.N. Anti-torture envoy making a stand. The Bush administration allowed water boarding, which is basically pouring water up someones nose until their brain thinks their drowning. This technique and others mentioned in the memos go against U.N. Conventions on torture. The Bush administration lawyers had defined these techniques differently to make them usable by their standards. These lawyers no longer have the president behind them now so who knows what their fate will be...

otters

A couple weeks ago when my boyfriend was up here we saw otters at sewell in the san marcos river. it was about 1030 or 11 at night and we were sitting on the stairs. about 25 feet from us we saw something big moving around in the water. at first i thought it was a huge snake or something. we went on to the bridge and there were three cute little otters swimming around gathering sticks. i have gone back since at the same time as before and seen them again. cool huh?
